Senator John Carona spoke at our monthly Northern Dallas Pachyderm club today about the important issues that the legislature will have to face in the session convenes for 140 days beginning January 1st, 2005:
1. The funding of public education: some sort of increase on sales tax (which is not deductible for federal income tax purpose and for every cent on a dollar raised, there will be about 2 billions dollar for state revenue), closing the loophole on franchise tax (which is currently the higher of 4% of a business' profit or .25% of your capital) where companies have subsidiaries out of Texas to avoid paying franchise tax.
2. The prison population in Texas, which has grown very fast over the last twelve years. How to keep the growth down because we cannot afford to build more prisons.
3. Worker's compensation, chiropractors should not be primary care doctors in the case of injured workers.
Yesterday I was helping to call voters for Danny Chandler, our candidate for Dallas County Sheriff and Bill Keffer for State Representative. Today, I was calling for president Bush and Danny Chandler. I also helped stamping the mail pieces: mailing for the Republican Party of Texas.
